In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, a small number of Methodists in the Southeastern Jurisdiction (beginning with the brothers Mike and Joe Watson) answered the personal call to be in voluntary ministry, within the United Methodist Church, even though there was no official channel open to them to operate from.  These “missioners”, who envisioned a mission program of short-term volunteer service emphasizing laity involvement, petitioned the General Board of Global Ministries for a missionary couple to serve as coordinators for what they faithfully believed would become a strong movement of ministry within our church.  GBGM first granted this request in 1975, when it appointed Tom and Margaret Curtis to fill the position.
