ORTEGA’S PAL PROGRAM AT VENETIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The PAL
(Positive Adult Leadership) program is a group who mentors at Venetia
Elementary. The only requirement is a love for children. Here’s what
one of our mentors had to say:
If I had not joined the PAL program here at Ortega Methodist,
I would have never known little Kyara. I became her mentor (or she
became mine) when she was in kindergarten at Venetia. She’s in the third
grade now at another school because her family moved to another area;
but I see her from time to time, and she still brightens my life.
Sometimes when school is not in session, she and her little sister and I
go to exciting places like Chick-Fil-A and McDonald’s and the Dollar
Store. Kyara drew a number of pictures in our book, Please
Don’t Tell the Bishop, and so I recently gave
her a copy and enclosed this note:
To
Kyara---
It was a joy
to mentor you when you were in kindergarten and first grade at Venetia
School. I wanted you to have some of the artwork that you did for me
during those years. Your pictures are included in this little book I
wrote for my church. At the bottom of page 17 you will find flowers you
drew. (You loved to draw flowers.) On page 20 you drew a little girl all
dressed up for a party. On page 22 you drew the train and cars on
Roosevelt Boulevard with my house in the background. On page 24 you drew
a teacher standing at the board and teaching a class of rabbits! I hope
you will continue to use your artistic talent. I also hope you will keep
this book to remind you of our happy times together.
